Getting cockroaches can be a pain in the neck and, for most people, is a pretty gross experience. Eliminating an infestation requires more than spraying insecticide or putting down bait. Cockroaches can get into everything in the house and they multiply quickly. The process of elimination can be daunting but you have to show them who is boss. Here are a few tips to help you deal with them:
- A deep clean is required
Clean anything that can be cleaned in the kitchen and the living room. Even the bedrooms if you tend to have any snacks/meals in there. Thoroughly vacuum and mop behind the oven and fridge. Vacuum/sweep and clean your floor frequently.
- Empty & clean the kitchen cabinets
Cockroaches can live on the crumbs and food spills in your cabinets. As you clean, make sure to thoroughly wipe all the cabinets in the kitchen.
- Clean your kitchen appliances
Cockroaches can live off grease found on your appliances in the kitchen! So, to get rid of the infestation you MUST clean under and around the appliances in the kitchen. Make sure to clean behind the stove, the dishwasher, the microwave, and under the sink. Do not leave dirty dishes in the sink over night.
- Buy a sealed garbage bin
Eliminate all sources of food; do not leave your garbage cans open as they will snack on whatever is in there. Remove the garbage frequently.
- Get rid of any open food sources
The pantry can be your friend or your enemy when dealing with pest infestations. Make sure to seal all containers and do not leave open bags of chips, sugar, flour, etc. Dust and wipe all canned foods in your pantry.
- Secure the pet food
If you have a pet make sure to cover their food over night because cockroaches will eat their food and use their water source!
